Hi and welcome to MansMatters, the erectile dysfunction shockwave clinic.

Many of our videos focus on specific causes and implications of erectile dysfunction, but today, I want to take a step back in history to 2500 BC to see how erectile dysfunction was viewed all those centuries ago.

In ancient China, philosophers believed that erectile dysfunction was caused by an imbalance of yin and yang—two contrary forces that interconnect. An ancient Chinese book from 2500 BC lists 22 ingredients that helped Emperor Wang T. restore this balance, allowing him to bed over 1200 women.

In ancient Egypt, around 1600 BC, erectile dysfunction was thought to be caused by evil spells. A magical remedy included grinding up baby crocodile hearts and rubbing them on the penis with lotus flowers.

The ancient Hindus believed that erectile dysfunction had a mental origin, often caused by intercourse with a distasteful woman. They had several remedies, including eating sesame mixed with special pulses, or rice, sugarcane mixed with hogs’ lard, cooked in butter, and finally, eating goat testicles.

In Greece, around 300 BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle extracted an aphrodisiac from the dried bodies of beetles, known today as Spanish Fly. While this was used for centuries, it is now considered toxic for humans. On a more sinister note, some Greek women were blamed for their husbands’ erectile dysfunction and condemned to death.

In ancient Rome, sex was intricately linked with religion, and noblemen were encouraged to have sex with both sexes. Sex was seen as a sign of prosperity, and individuals would turn to private religions or magic to improve their sexuality.

During the 10th century, the Vikings, who raided and pillaged across Europe, valued being well-endowed as a key to social hierarchy. Men with erectile dysfunction or small penises were ridiculed and would have dropped rapidly in the social rankings. While we have no records of specific treatments, it’s safe to say that Viking men suffering from erectile dysfunction or small penises faced severe social consequences.

In the Dark Ages, around 1300, it was believed that demons caused erectile dysfunction. The Malleus Maleficarum, or the Hammer of Witches, a major textbook for witch hunters first published in 1486, documented how witches were believed to make men impotent. Men with ED problems were urged to track down women who had bewitched their penises, and if necessary, use violence to restore their erections.

Towards the end of the 16th century, an Italian doctor discovered that you could treat erectile dysfunction by blocking veins that drained blood from the penis. While this Italian doctor was on to something, it would take many more years before penile pumps became a recognised treatment.

At MansMatters, we work in the 21st century. We no longer blame erectile dysfunction on distasteful women, accuse them of bewitching our penises, or recommend aphrodisiacs made from beetles, or the eating of goat testicles. Instead, we use the most advanced shockwave therapy in the world.

Shockwave therapy uses sound waves to develop new and better blood vessels, which means many men can achieve erect and hard penises again. It may have taken 4500 years to get here, but now there is a truly non-invasive, successful long-term treatment for erectile dysfunction, allowing many men to rediscover their sex lives.
