Hi and welcome to MansMatters, the erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease shockwave clinic. Today, I want to discuss with you the different stages of Peyronie’s disease.

From when you first feel the symptoms to when the condition is fully established, every man is different. However, the progression of Peyronie’s disease typically takes between 12 and 18 months. During this time, you will notice changes in your penis when it is erect.

There are two main stages of Peyronie’s disease: the acute stage and the chronic stage.

In the acute stage, small plaques begin to form within the penis. These plaques increase in size and change shape over time. During this stage, the condition consists of thousands of individual micro plaques that are soft and flexible. In the early months of the acute phase, changes in curvature might not be noticeable, but they will develop over time. As the micro plaques increase in size and start bonding together, most patients will experience some pain or discomfort, a bending of the penis, and often a hard lump in one area.

At this stage, most conventional treatments are not recommended. If you are in the acute stage of development, you might be advised to wait until the problem worsens. This is not the advice anyone wants to hear. However, focused shockwave therapy is an excellent solution to prevent the condition from becoming more severe. It can also help prevent the onset of erectile dysfunction or the inability to have intercourse due to a severe deformity.

The next stage of Peyronie’s disease is the chronic stage. During the chronic stage, the plaque is fully formed and hardened, and pain typically subsides. The blood vessels around the affected area become clogged with multiple plaques. In many cases, the patient will experience partial erectile dysfunction, loss of girth and length, and softening at the end of the penis. The bend in the penis can vary from mild, where sex is still possible but difficult, to extreme cases where the penis may curve completely around in a circle, drastically impacting quality of life.

Historically, the only treatment at this stage has been life-changing surgery, such as penile plication, penile implants, or grafts. These options are discussed extensively in our video “Peyronie’s Disease Cure” on the MansMatters YouTube channel. However, we are able to avoid surgery for the vast majority of men, even when they come to us in the chronic stage.

Our focused shockwave therapy can crack and break down the plaque, allowing it to dissolve and be absorbed by the body. It also regenerates blood vessels and nerve tissue, straightens the penis, and enables men to rediscover satisfying sex again.
