Welcome to MansMatters, the erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease shockwave clinic. Today, I want to discuss the connection between Peyronie’s disease, a curved penis, and erectile dysfunction (ED), which is the inability to achieve a strong enough erection for penetrative sex.

A high proportion of Peyronie’s disease patients also suffer from erectile dysfunction. While some men may have had sexual dysfunction prior to developing Peyronie’s disease, in most cases, a patient with Peyronie’s disease will notice their ability to achieve full erections diminishes as the condition progresses. There is a direct correlation between these two medical conditions, and both can be treated together with focused shockwave therapy.

A man’s penis starts off as flaccid or soft. In order to become erect, roughly 20 times as much blood needs to flow swiftly into the penis and be trapped within the two long tubes. This increased volume of blood causes the penis to swell, making it hard, inflexible, and rigid.

In both Peyronie’s disease and erectile dysfunction, plaque forms in the blood vessels, impeding blood flow and preventing a full erection. This results in clogged blood vessels, reducing blood flow and slowing the process. In Peyronie’s disease, this issue is further compounded when a lump of plaque forms on the side of the penis, which prevents that side from expanding during an erection. The result is a penis that bends at an angle.

Shockwave therapy is the most advanced treatment for breaking down the Peyronie’s disease plaque and straightening the penis. One of the effects of breaking down this plaque is that it clears the blood vessels in the affected area. This not only enhances the patient’s ability to have an erection, but it often leads to a stronger erection as well.

For patients who suffer from both moderate to severe ED and Peyronie’s disease, shockwave therapy can be prescribed for both conditions. This has two main effects. The first is the revitalisation of the blood vessels within the penis, known as angiogenesis. More blood vessels allow for more blood to flow into the penis, leading to a stronger erection. The second effect is the development of new nerve tissue, known as neurogenesis. This increases the sensitivity of the penis, leading to more satisfying and fulfilling sex.
