Hi and welcome to MansMatters, the erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease shockwave clinic.

Today, I’d like to discuss the link between Peyronie’s disease and Dupuytren’s contracture. In medical terms, this is considered a co-morbidity, meaning that if you suffer from one condition, you have a greater likelihood of developing the other.

With Peyronie’s disease, fibrous plaque forms inside the lining of the penis, causing it to bend during an erection and inhibiting blood flow. In the case of Dupuytren’s contracture, the same process occurs in the hand. Over time, one or more fingers may become permanently bent in a flexed position, making it difficult or even impossible to grasp objects.

Dupuytren’s contracture can affect both hands and all fingers. The deformities vary from finger to finger, with some bending all the way to the palm, while others bend at lesser angles. The condition often begins with a small nodule under the skin, and over time, the pain may worsen.

If you suffer from Dupuytren’s contracture, it’s essential to seek early treatment. Since the early 1800s, a correlation between Peyronie’s disease and Dupuytren’s contracture has been recognised. It’s estimated that up to 15 percent of men with Dupuytren’s contracture will also suffer from Peyronie’s disease. In fact, a recent study found that the prevalence of Peyronie’s disease in men with Dupuytren’s contracture is similar to the prevalence of Dupuytren’s contracture in men diagnosed with Peyronie’s disease.

In the early stages of Dupuytren’s disease, before the fingers become too deformed, extracorporeal focused shockwave therapy can be an effective treatment for many men and women. The shockwave therapy targets fibrous plaque and nodules, breaking them up. When combined with physiotherapy, this treatment can help straighten the affected fingers.

If you suffer from Peyronie’s disease and notice any changes in your hands or fingers, don’t ignore it. It may not just be a sign of ageing — it’s likely that you are also experiencing Dupuytren’s contracture.
