Hi and welcome to MansMatters, the erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease shockwave clinic. Today, I want to discuss Peyronie’s disease and its connection to depression.
Some people suffer from depression due to a severe medical condition, while others experience it after a life-changing event. For many men with Peyronie’s disease, the onset of penile pain and the shock of seeing their penis curve with every erection becomes increasingly distressing. When it eventually becomes difficult or even impossible to have sex, it can set them on a downward spiral.
Peyronie’s disease is indiscriminate and can affect men of all ages, from younger men to those in their 80s. The shock and distress, compounded with erectile dysfunction and the struggle to have satisfactory sexual intercourse, leads to diminished confidence, performance anxiety, and depression. One study found that 48% of men with Peyronie’s disease were diagnosed with depression, with 21% falling at the severe end of the spectrum. That’s a huge figure.
From our clinical experience, Peyronie’s disease-related depression can be avoided for the majority of men if they take action to seek help and fully explore the treatment options available to them. However, in most cases, men just suffer in silence as the bend in their penis worsens. This has a devastating effect on them. Some men avoid having sex or talking with their partners, leading to psychosexual and relationship breakdowns.
It is not uncommon for a patient to show emotional distress when they first visit our clinic or express eternal gratitude after successful treatment. In some cases, we combine shockwave therapy with psychosexual counseling. Men who seek treatment often face an uphill battle. At the Peyronie’s disease level, they may be prescribed topical treatments for pain and eventually referred to a urologist. This process can take a long time, during which depression and fear often set in.
In many cases, invasive and life-changing surgery is recommended by the NHS or private urology clinics. These procedures can range from penile plication (which shortens the penis by up to two inches) to penile implants (which require the manual pumping of an erection), or grafting operations that can risk erectile dysfunction.
For many men, having their penis operated on in such a way is deeply unsettling and exacerbates feelings of depression. The treatment that has shown natural and outstanding results for Peyronie’s disease is focused shockwave therapy.
Focused shockwave therapy is not yet available for Peyronie’s disease on the NHS, although it may be offered in a few years. It will likely take many more years for them to gain the same level of experience as private clinics. In over 90% of the patients we have treated with focused shockwave therapy, we have successfully straightened their penis and avoided the need for painful, invasive surgery. Most importantly, we’ve helped give these men the confidence and self-esteem to start anew.
