What is the difference between Cushing’s syndrome & Cushing’s disease?
Cushing’s syndrome is named after the eminent US neurosurgeon, who described the first patients with this condition in 1912. It’s an endocrine issue to do with glands and hormones, while Cushing’s disease is a type of Cushing’s syndrome.
Cushing’s disease is caused by a benign tumor located in the pituitary gland. This can secrete too much ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), which in turn increases cortisol.
Cushing’s Syndrome
Cushing’s syndrome indicates that there may be physical and emotional symptoms caused by having too much of the hormone cortisol in the body. Cortisol is one of the most vital hormones and can affect almost every organ in the body and without it, life is impossible.
The amount of cortisol in your blood is regulated by the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands and any anomalies in these organs or irregularities in other organs that may affect the pituitary can cause the balance of cortisol to be disturbed, leading to Cushing’s syndrome.
Cushing’s Disease
Cushing’s disease is caused by elevated levels of cortisol, described above and usually occurs in adults between 20 and 50 years of age. Initially patients notice weight gain around the trunk and in the face. Some people with Cushing disease can develop a hump on their upper back caused by unusual deposits of fat, while others can suffer from severe tiredness, muscle weakness, and thin and brittle bones that are prone to fracture.
More noticeable to others though can be the mood disorders such as anxiety, irritability, and depression that Cushing’s disease patients endure, plus the effects on concentration and memory.
