About Male Incontinence
Male incontinence affects men of all ages and can significantly impact daily activities and comfort.
As men age, incontinence problems become more common and can be triggered by a variety of medical conditions, including prostate issues, neurological disorders, diabetes, urinary tract infections, stones within the urinary tract, and chronic coughs.
Incontinence and the Prostate Gland
One of the key causes of male incontinence is prostate issues, a condition we specialise in at MansMatters. We offer treatments to manage incontinence and erectile dysfunction in men affected by prostate conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and post-radical prostatectomy surgery. Surgeries such as radiation therapies and radical prostatectomy can damage nerves and muscles associated with bladder control, which may lead to a loss of control. An enlarged prostate, commonly referred to as BPH, can lead to bladder leakage.
Neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries, can disrupt the signals from the brain to the bladder, potentially leading to urinary incontinence.
Medical comorbidities such as diabetes and diabetic neuropathy may worsen incontinence, while excessive consumption of caffeine or alcohol can irritate the bladder, increasing the likelihood of leakage and affecting its frequency. Smoking is also a risk factor, as it can negatively impact circulatory and respiratory health.
Types of Incontinence
MansMatters specialise in managing different forms of male incontinence, including stress, urge, mixed, and overflow incontinence:
- Urge incontinence occurs when a man has a sudden desire to urinate and cannot hold it. This can lead to accidents before a man reaches the lavatory.
- Stress incontinence occurs when pressure on the bladder is stronger than the muscles that control it and can happen when sneezing, coughing or exertion in sport.
- Overflow incontinence occurs when a man’s bladder doesn’t empty and there is always a residual amount left. This causes leakage.
- Mixed incontinence refers to a combination where a number of the factors above are present.
Our treatments
MansMatters offer advanced technology to help treat men with incontinence, including the Tesla chair.
A traditional approach to treating incontinence is through manual pelvic floor muscle exercises. The Tesla chair offers a modern alternative, designed to conduct the equivalent of many pelvic floor exercises in a short period of time, potentially improving muscle strength and bladder control.
Unlike manual exercises, the Tesla chair aims to engage a higher percentage of muscle fibres, potentially providing a more comprehensive treatment.
