Shockwave Therapy for Peyronie's Disease
During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak we continue to provide advice and treatment in isolation conditions. You will be seen only by a doctor and meet no other members of the public. Call us to talk through the options and how we can best help you.
Peyronie’s disease is the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis that cause curved, painful erections. While penises vary in shape and size, having a curved erection isn’t necessarily a cause for concern or a problem. But Peyronie’s disease can cause a significant bend and as a result pain for the men affected with or without an erection. The scar tissue (plaques) associated with Peyronie’s disease can be felt under the skin of the penis as flat lumps or a band of hard tissue.
Peyronie’s disease may make it difficult to getting or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction) and prevent a man from having or enjoying sexual intercourse and for many sufferers, Peyronie’s disease can cause stress, anxiety and embarrassment.
Peyronie’s disease might appear suddenly or develop gradually and sometimes goes away on its own with the pain diminishing or disappearing altogether. But in the majority of cases, it the scar tissue and curvature will remain the same or get worse over time.
Variations in how Peyronie’s disease affects men include the penis being be curved upward, downward or bent to one side. In some cases, the erect penis might have narrowing, indentations or an hourglass appearance, with a tight, narrow band around the shaft. Some men find that their penis becomes shorter as a result of Peyronie’s disease.
How We Treat Peyronie’s Disease
Our programme, is a non-invasive treatment and can provides improvements in overcoming Peyronie’s disease in men at early and later stages of it and allowing them to them to enjoy renewed sexual spontaneity, intimacy and a better sex life without embarrassment.
Shockwave for Peyronie’s disease is a sophisticated medical treatment. It works by directing special focussed shockwaves (similar to the ones used to break kidney’s stones, but not painful) on the plaque to weaken, break, and reduce the plaque. The broken fibrosis is then re-absorbed and recycled by the body. During this process a welcome side effect occurs which is Angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) which in turn helps you to achieve harder erections.
We use the latest diagnostic ultrasound to accurately locate the plaque, this reveals how big it is and determines the course of treatment. A hand-held device is placed on the shaft of the penis and a series of low-level shock waves are administered. These are delivered as impulses and are not painful. Treatment takes about 30 minutes, after which, the patient will be able to carry on life as normal. Treatments are carried out either by a practising doctor or medically trained shockwave specialist.
Shockwave treatment causes no side-effects, is non-invasive and requires just short visits to our clinic for the time period specified by the specialist. For patients who have suffered from Peyronie’s disease for some time obvious improvements are often noticeable within two weeks after the therapy has started.
Read how the improvement from painful erections is significant, which is the most common complaint of Peyronie’s disease patients; that there is a significant improvement in the curvature as well. The reduction in the plaque size improved subjective assessment of the plaque and curvature all correlate with the improved sexual life of these patients. No adverse effects have been recorded in the study post-ESWT, thereby implying it to be a safe modality. Click on Link to Read Study
How Does Shockwave Therapy
for Erectile Dysfunction Work?
The treatment uses focussed shockwaves which are applied to the penis using our Swiss engineered shockwave equipment, the STORZ DUOLITH® SD1 which provides ultra-focused shock wave therapy, superior to radial shockwave used by many other practitioners. The shockwaves create new blood vessels in the penis which allow for increased blood flow.
